BACK TO BREAST CANCER INITIATIVE EAST AFRICA
Empowering Rwandan villages with vital breast cancer awareness, education, and support, one community at a time.
Speciose serves as a Pink Village Ambassador and Community Healthcare Worker under the Breast Cancer Initiative for East Africa (BCIEA). She is the example of how one person that cares about her community can make such a significant impact. She has lead Pink Village Experiences that have reached over 6000 village residents. She is currently the Cell Coordinator for Community Health in her area, leading awareness, early detection, and community engagement activities within rural villages (Kirehe district). She servers as a model for leadership and is our real-life superhero on the ground!
Our Pink Village Ambassador Program
Change is stronger when it’s homegrown. We train Village Ambassadors, volunteers, community health workers, and nurses, to be trusted, on-the-ground champions. Through ongoing coaching, they lead awareness, guide neighbors to care, and ensure no woman walks her cancer journey alone. Local leaders. Lasting impact.
Our Current Village Coverage Area
We currently cover the Kihere District area which is comprised of 6 cells with a total of 35 villages. We are in the process of expanding our coverage area and training a new cohort of Community Health Workers and Volunteers. We are also expanding our efforts in the Southern Province and Huye area which will be headed up by our Medical Student Ambassadors attending University of Rwanda.
Our PINK OCTOBER Activities
October turns our villages pink with action. We focus on:
Intensified awareness and education sessions in village centers
On-site support and counseling for women and families
Organized transportation to screening facilities
Free mammograms for eligible women
Screening sign-ups and follow-up navigation
Community-led outreach with our trained Ambassadors
Data collection to improve services and track impact
It’s a month of momentum that saves time, reduces barriers, and catches cancer earlier. Pink October isn’t symbolic, it’s life-saving.
